Campagnolo Centaur Review

Campagnolo have been designing and distributing high quality bike components since 1933. Campagnolo have always had one aim and that is to produce advanced products with enduring quality, this aim has been undoubtedly achieved with the Campagnolo Centaur chainset. Campagnolo’s latest chainset has been completely redesigned to create an integrated design, with technical specifications including a carbon fibre crankset which weighs just 656 grams; this is dramatically less when compared to other chainsets. The ultra Drive chainring offer a new design featuring eight pins which allow the chain to shift easily.

The M.P.S chainrings also provide fast and accurate shifting at all times. Impressively, the Centaur features the Ultra-Torque type bottom bracket system; this unique system has a solid feel whilst remaining extremely light and narrow whilst maintaining maximum rigidity. This has been created by positioning the bearing outside the bottom bracket shell; the larger axle diameter has also resulted in creating greater axle rigidity. Additionally, the permanent conjoin of the semi-axles of the bottom bracket to the crackset arms has made an extremely ergonomic chainset. The redesign of the chainset has reduced the lateral dimensions of the axle which has ended the amount of irritating contact with the ankle when pedalling.

The new Power Torque System bottom bracket is easy to self assemble for cyclist who want to enjoy the benefits of the chainset quickly without the hassle of spending hours in the garage. More importantly, the high rigidity of the bottom bracket provides efficient power transmission. There are a few weaknesses to the chainset, but the only noticeable weakness is that it doesn’t possess a corrosion resistant finish; this means that the chainset will require regular inspections and cleaning to maintain its existing original high machine finish. The Campagnolo Centaur requires b.b with L.111mm and CT Front derailleurs. Overall the Campagnolo Centaur looks great, is reliable and offers very precise shifts throughout its ratios.

It is available in a number of different options including:

Campagnolo Centaur Carbon Compact 10sp

The Centaur has been completely redesigned by Campagnolo to produce a lightweight and easily maintainable chainset that also offers the same U and Q factors as the UltraTorque. The Campagnolo technicians have also managed to improve the shifting performance of the Centaur by placing ultra-high quality bearings on the most extreme points of the central axle to provide smooth shifting and improved pedal efficiency.

The Power Torque System on the Centaur ensures high rigidity on the cranks and chainrings, while the light weight also improves the efficiency of the power transmission. The chainset comes with Full carbon uni-directional cranks, chainrings with MPS (Micro Precision Shifting), Light-alloy chainrings with anti-friction treatment and an 8-pin outer chainring. The Campagnolo Centaur Carbon Compact chainset weighs in at an impressive 640g.

Campagnolo Centaur Carbon Double 10sp

The Centaur from Campagnolo is a chainset that is designed to ‘never make a mistake.’ It features high quality cranks and chainrings to ensure smooth and fast shifting and highly efficient power transmission.

The chainset features a Centaurtm Carbon Crankset that allows for ‘agile pedal stroke and a correct movement in relation to the length of the lower limbs.’ The Power Torque System on the Centaur ensures high rigidity on the cranks and chainrings, while the light weight also improves the efficiency of the power transmission. The Centaur Carbon Double also features Full-carbon unidirectional-multidirectional cranks, chainrings with MPS (Micro Precision Shifting) and an 8-pin outer chainring. The Campagnolo Centaur Carbon Double chainset weighs in at an impressive 644g.

Campagnolo Centaur Compact 10sp

The Centaur has been completely redesigned by Campagnolo to produce a lightweight and easily maintainable chainset that also offers the same U and Q factors as the UltraTorque. Campagnolo have also managed to improve the shifting performance of the Centaur by placing ultra-high quality bearings on the most extreme points of the central axle to provide smooth shifting and improved pedal efficiency.

The Power Torque System on the Centaur ensures works in perfect harmony with Campagnolo 10 speed drivetrains, offering high rigidity on the cranks and chainrings, while the light weight also improves the efficiency of the power transmission.
The chainset comes with forged aluminium cranks, light, anti-friction treated MPS (Micro Precision Shifting) chainrings and an 8-pin large chainring. The integrated PowerTorque axle requires PowerTorque BB cups.

Campagnolo Centaur Double 10sp

The Centaur from Campagnolo is a high quality chainset that is designed all around its rigidity. The incredible ‘category leading’ stiffness of the Centaur ensures incredibly quick and smooth shifting no matter what the conditions.

The Power Torque System on the Centaur ensures high rigidity on the cranks and chainrings, while the light weight also improves the efficiency of the power transmission. The super quick shifting on the Centaur is achieved by 8 up shift and 2 downshift zones that provide accurate and swift gear changes under any load. The MPS (Micro Precision Shifting) chainrings also provide a perfect synchronous system to aid the fast and precise shifting. The chainset is also fitted with forged aluminium cranks, anti-friction treated chainrings and an 8-pin outer chainring. The Campagnolo Centaur Double 10sp Chainset weighs in at a total of 738g.

Campagnolo Centaur Ultra-Torque Double 10sp

The Centaur Ultra-Torque from Campagnolo is a chainset that is ideal for riders who enjoy routes with a lot of alternating heights.

The chainset features an integrated ULTRA-TORQUE™ bottom bracket, Ultra-Drive chainrings and requires a CT™ front derailleur. The Centaur Ultra-Torque from Campagnolo weighs in at 828g.
